Plantar Fasciitis: Prevention & Treatment

The Planta Fascia is a ligament that runs along the bottom of the foot. The tendon attaches at the heel bone and runs forward to the metatarsal heads in the forefoot area just behind the toes. This ligament, when stretched, becomes inflamed and can tear to create pain in the arch and heel areas. The condition will worsen if not treated and if the cause is not discontinued.

Several factors can bring on the condition but the most common cause is over-pronation - a bending of the foot inward as we walk or run. When the foot over-pronates, the arch tends to collapse which results in a stretching of the plantar fascia ligament. This pulling and stretching occurs with each step and when we consider an average person takes between 7,500 to 10,000 steps per day, it is easy to see how the irritation can cause a painful condition known as Plantar Fasciitis. If left untreated, the condition can escalate as the plantar fascia ligament will tear and become inflammed.
