Achilles Tendonitis

2 minute read

Achilles Tendonitis is a debilitating foot disorder that brings on swelling of the Achilles tendon - the tendon running vertically on the back of the heel. Athletes are highly susceptible to contracting chronic Achilles Tendonitis. And if ignored, a mild Achilles Tendonitis injury can develop into Acute Achilles Tendonitis which can be debilitating. It is recommended by Podiatrist and other foot care specialist that Achilles Tendonitis should be treated as early as possible to prevent worsening.

Achilles Tendonitis is a condition that develops slowly. If the activity causing the disorder is continued, the condition worsens with increasing pain. Tenderness and pain will increase until the tendon ruptures which will inhibit walking or running for an extended period of time.

The disorder can be caused by high impact activities that require sudden stopping or a change in direction such as dancing, sports such as basketball, football, soccer, hockey, etc. People with flat feet are more susceptible due to increased stress on the tendon.

Diagnosis is by a trained foot care specialist who will conduct a series of test. Treatment includes rest, refraining from activities that exacerbate the condition, ice packs and mild medication such as ibuprofen to reduce swelling and inflammation, elevate the feet when possible, and compress the area with an elastic bandage. Certain stretching exercises may be required during rehabilitation. Chronic sufferers may require surgery; although, it is not common.
