How To Treat IT Band Syndrome

2 minute read

Iliotibial Band Syndrome is one of the most common causes of knee pain in runners. IT Band Syndrome is caused when the knee becomes inflammed during training sessions or from over-use. Sometimes, over-pronation of the foot (turning downward or inward) may cause pain on the lateral (outer) side of the knee, lateral thigh, or lateral hip, known as IT Band Syndrome. The degree of discomfort can range from a dull aching to a sharp stabbing pain, and it is usually not localized but covers a large area.

Treatment covers the 3 S's “ Stretching, Strengthening and Supporting. These three steps have been found to be the simplest and most effective treatment for these types of injuries. A dedicated exercise regimen should provide strengthening and stretching, while support comes from a quality, proper fitting Orthotic Arch Support. Other important treatments include icing and resting the knee.

Stretching of the IT-Band, hamstring, piriformis and quad, and supporting the foot with proper fitting shoes and quality insoles can prevent or help to eliminate the vast majority of stresses on the lower extremity. Wearing Orthotic arch supports also help to balance and stabilize the foot to prevent over-pronation, as well as help with eliminating stress on lower extremities.

Insoles that can help reduce pain caused from IT-Band are the Spenco Polysorb Total Support Original Insoles . They offer cushioning for both the heel and ball of foot areas, while also giving the necessary arch support to relieve pain associated with over-pronation.

One of the easiest and most effective solutions is also to add a simple over-the-counter cushioning insole, such as the Spenco Cross Trainer Insoles or Spenco Walker Runner Insoles. These provide a forgiving support for both the arch and heel.

Spenco brand insoles and orthotic arch supports have been awarded the prestigious Seal of Acceptance by the American Podiatric Medical Association. Spenco Arch Supports and Insoles are all clinically designed and doctor recommended as proven to be effective in preventing foot ailments as well helping to offer relief from foot related pain.
