Why do you recommend these items?

Our top recommendations for standing consist of products that will provide your feet with a combination of good support and good cushioning. The support will help to prevent foot fatigue and distribute pressure more evenly across the foot, preventing any singular part of the foot from bearing the entire brunt of the pressure they experience during long periods of standing. The cushioning will provide your feet with pressure relief, as the cushioning will help absorb pressure and serve as a buffer between your feet and the surface you’re standing on.

For insoles, our top recommendations would be:

  • FORM Memory Foam Insoles: These insoles offer plush memory foam cushioning throughout the insole, gel padding under the heel and ball-of-foot for extra cushioning where your feet are likely to become sore the fastest, and a semi-rigid arch support that will help support your foot without being too rigid or intrusive.
  • 10 Seconds 3030 Pressure Relief Insoles: These insoles feature plush cushioning throughout in addition to a thickly-cushioned pad that runs under the arch and metatarsals of your foot. While the midfoot of the insole remains flexible, the plush midfoot cushioning will provide plenty of support and pressure relief.
  • PowerStep ComfortLast Insoles: These insoles offer a proprietary gel/memory foam cushioning combo that will provide excellent pressure relief along with one of the best arch supports available in a fully flexible support.
  • Superfeet Work Cushion Insoles: These insoles offer good cushioning throughout along with a semi-rigid support that will help reinforce the arch and heel of the foot to prevent foot fatigue. A built-in heel cushion will help further comfort the heel of the foot, too.

In addition, we also recommend a good pair of socks and/or foot sleeves to help provide your feet with extra support to further prevent foot fatigue.

  • The OS1st WP4 Wellness Socks offer built-in support for the arch of the foot while also providing your feet with a good amount of cushioning all over. Available in crew, 1/4-crew, and no-show designs.
  • The OS1st FS6 Foot Sleeves are thin support sleeves that will help provide the arch and heel of your foot with extra support. Thin enough to be worn under socks, these braces can be used alongside your own favorite socks.

The Dematonics Ultra Cool Gel and TriggerPoint MobiPoint Massage Ball can also help to provide your feet with relief after a long period of standing, too, helping your feet to recover faster.

We choose our product recommendations based on a combination of our own usage & opinion of the products, product design & product features, conversations we've had with our customers regarding their product usage & experience, and collective customer product feedback & reviews.

How Does Standing Affect the Feet?

Anytime you're on your feet, your body is putting pressure on your feet. When you walk or move, this pressure is more naturally distributed across the foot as your foot is moved, but when you're simply standing — especially when you're standing for a long period of time — that pressure keeps bearing down on the same part of the foot without relief.

Those who stand for long periods of time (such as cashiers and security guards) will typically find that they develop pain in the heel, arch, and ball of their feet. While shifting around on your feet may bring some relief, this pain and discomfort will typically continue to grow the longer you remain on your feet.

Standing can also create knee pain, hip pain, and lower back pain, all of which are typically caused by poor posture and/or misaligned joints.

How Do Insoles Help with Standing?

Cushioning and support are both necessary to alleviate pain and discomfort from standing.

A good amount of cushioning will help to absorb much of the pressure that your body exerts on your feet, which will provide your feet with immediate relief, especially under the heel and ball-of-foot, while proper arch support will help keep the arch of the foot reinforced while also helping to distribute pressure more evenly across the foot, eliminating singular "pain points."

The best insoles for standing feature either a flexible or semi-rigid arch support, providing your foot with good support without it being overly rigid, as well as at least a moderate amount of cushioning for good pressure relief across the entire foot. What Else Can I Do for Relief from Standing?

In addition to having a good pair of arch support insoles suitable for long periods of standing, there's a few other tips to help prevent or alleviate discomfort from standing:

  • Standing on a cushioned surface is much better for your feet than standing on a hard surface. If you spend long periods of time standing on concrete, tile, linoleum, or other hard-material floors, placing an anti-fatigue mat where you stand can provide a world of difference.
  • Supportive socks can help provide additional foot support beyond what your insoles will provide on their own, which will help better distribute pressure and prevent foot fatigue.
  • While taking pressure off your feet by occasionally sitting is ideal, this isn't always possible. Instead, stretching your feet while standing can help alleviate discomfort, even if just stretching in place.
  • Massaging your feet after a long day can help your feet recover faster, too. Personal care items such as massage balls, soothing foot creams, and foot baths all help your feet to relax and recover.
