Nurses, doctors, and other medical personnel often work in highly-demanding & fast-paced environments that require them to spend long periods on their feet. This might include long periods of standing during surgical procedures, long periods of walking when making rounds, or even bursts of running when handling emergency situations. This means that a typical shift in a hospital or clinic setting can involve long hours of standing, walking, and even running, all of which place a high amount of stress on the feet.
Work shifts for doctors and nurses, especially those in hospitals and similar workplaces, are often longer than the average work shift, with 12-hour shifts being common. This prolonged stress on the feet during a typical shift, combined with the fact that most hospitals and medical clinics have hard flooring throughout, means that the feet take a beating each and every day. Not only are you on your feet for long periods of time, but your work environment isn't helping to alleviate the strain you're placing on your feet. In fact, hard floors add to the strain your feet sustain!
This can lead to, at a minimum, foot fatigue and soreness during and after your shifts. However, over time, the repeated strain on your feet — if not addressed — can lead to more serious and debilitating foot conditions, such as plantar fasciitis, Achilles tendinitis, and fallen arches, all of which result from repeated strain on the foot that goes unaddressed until it's too late.
A good pair of supportive shoe insoles goes a long way in ensuring that your feet don't let you down in the middle of your shift. For nurses, doctors, and other medical professionals in particular — given the particular demands of your noble careers — we recommend an insole with a few key features:
- Your insole should provide both heel and arch support. This will help to more evenly distribute pressure across the entire foot, prevent arch collapse, and maintain heel stability throughout your shifts.
- Your insole should have a good amount of cushioning throughout. Cushioning helps provide both pressure relief and shock absorption in addition to providing a nice "soft" platform for your foot. This will go a long way towards reducing fatigue and soreness.
- Lastly, we recommend at least having shock absorption under the heel of the insole. Given that your heels are the first part of the foot to strike the ground whether walking or running, and given that the hard floors in hospitals and clinics have zero give to them, heel pain is a particularly common pain symptom. A shock-absorbent heel will mitigate much of this shock to help prevent soreness and pain.
